This topic came to my attention recently and I was eager to share my knowledge with the Green City Living Community.
This past year we've seen the Black Lives Matter movement take center stage in bringing awareness to systemic racism and the negative effects on POC. Now more than ever, we must educate ourselves on important issues such as racism, sexism, ageism, and today's focus: ableism.
More specifically, we'll look at eco-ableism which examines how ableism is related to the environment and sustainability.
Feel free to leave any questions or comments below.
What is Ableism?
Ableism is discrimination and social prejudice against people with disabilities and/or people who are perceived to be disabled. Ableism characterizes persons who are defined by their disabilities as inferior to the non-disabled.
What is Eco-Ableism?
Many of the positive changes made to habits and lifestyle, changes that could contribute to minimizing climate change and rehabilitating the environment, are difficult or impossible for disabled people to do.
How Can You Do Your Part?
Educate Yourself About Disability Issues
Support Disability Organizations
Support Innovations Directed Towards Disabled People
Be Aware of Accessibility Challenges
Don't Use Ableist Language or Expressions
If you're looking to read more about eco-ableism I've added some amazing articles that go more in depth on the issue:
