10 Ways to Reuse Leftovers to Reduce Food Waste- Part One

Green City Living Co. eco home zero waste

The holidays are a wonderful time of the year. For the most part, we can make sure they are low waste and eco-friendly. But the culprit of any holiday party is food waste. My mom always hated throwing out leftovers and would do everything not to throw away food. Over the years, we've come up with some pretty creative ways to save our food from being wasted.

Here are 10 Ways to Reuse Leftovers to Reduce Food Waste:

1. Croutons

Use any old or stale bread to make croutons. Cut up the bread into cubes and throw into the oven with your favourite seasoning!

2. Bread Pudding

Another way to use up old or stale bread is by making a bread pudding! This is a super delicious dessert that anyone can make.

3. Fruit Pie

If you have any fruits that are about to go bad or are already too ripe for your liking, then consider making a fruit pie! You don't notice the mushy texture and it tends to be more flavourful. Plus, you can throw together pretty much any combination of fruits and it will taste delicious!

4. Apple Sauce

If you have soft apples then make some apple sauce! This is great for snacking, baking, and more.

5. Orange or Lemon Peels

You can simmer orange or lemon peels in a small pan with some vanilla extract and water to eliminate cooking odours and add a natural home fragrance. Alternatively, you can scrape the white flesh from the peels and put them in a large Mason jar. Add vinegar to cover the skins and use a metal lid to seal it. In two weeks, you’ll have citrus-scented vinegar to use in your favourite homemade cleaners.

6. Banana Bread

If you have overripe bananas then try making this delicious banana bread recipe! You can also make muffins from this recipe.

7. Smoothies

A great way to use up fruits and vegetables is to make a smoothie! You can throw in any combination of fruits and find yourself very satisfied.

8. Eggs

You can whip together a scrambled egg with leftover vegetables, meats, cheeses, olives and anything else that is available in your fridge. This is a very easy meal to make when you're on the go but want something to keep you full.

9. Stir-Fry

Stir-fry is an amazing way to cook up leftover meat, vegetables and carbs like rice or noodles. It's super easy and requires little effort!

10. Soups

Soups are another quick and easy way to use up your leftovers. All you need are some vegetables, a base and any herbs or spices you like. You can also throw in any noodles or beans.
